Writtle, Essex
This turn-of-the-century property in a cul-de-sac location backs onto the scenic Writtle estate. Owned by two local key workers, the garden was dated and tired with only the borrowed landscape in its favour. Stained and worn concrete slabs coupled with unstable retaining steps and walls made access around the garden an uneasy and unenjoyable experience.

The Brief : To incorporate the ideals of modern, clean living with the use of natural materials all round, creating a relaxing and entertaining space with areas to dine, relax and "let the dog loose!"

The Design : Based on a 45° angle, the Indian Sandstone Carpet and Green Oak raised bedding complements the mix of natural materials in a soft, contemporary design. A raised oak pond forms part of the boundary to the raised lawn with access gained by built-in steps adjacent to the red brick retaining wall ... all within sight and reach of the conservatory doors.
